PAF founded its community engagement on the use of participatory approaches, among them Reflect, a participatory methodology for critical analysis of issues and for social change. This has given PAF an approach to social change which provides opportunity to learn basic literacy skills and to raise the adult’s capacity, and confidence, to engage effectively in their own development. The participatory methodologies use problem solving tools which promote critical thinking and analysis, and foster innovativeness and creativity. We have used this philosophical foundation in our community communication and mobilization to bring about a change of mindset concerning whose responsibility it is to address all aspects of household and community life. This has led to PAF embracing community-led development beyond community participation in benefactor-led programming.
